Ryanair (FR, Dublin Int'l) is planning to ramp up its Romanian operations over the next five years with domestic flights already on the cards airline CEO Michael O'Leary has said.

"In five years, we estimate there will be 10 million passengers in Romania," he was quoted by the Ziarul Financiar newspaper. "In Poland for example, we operate out of twelve airports with four bases. In Romania, our work should be similar to that of Poland in the coming years. We just have to reach agreements with airports."

O'Leary added that the Irish LCC sees potential for "four to five" bases in Romania while serving ten to twelve airports locally.

Growth within Romania is, however, contingent on the right prices being met. In March, the carrier's Chief Commercial Officer David O'Brien complained that Bucharest Otopeni airport was still too expensive an airport to consider opening a base there. He said handling fees there were more expensive than Copenhagen Kastrup in Denmark adding that a drastic reduction in costs would need to occur for the Romanian aviation market to truly reach its potential.

“The airport in Bucharest is too expensive and this is why we have no plans to open a base here. We will think about it when they will have a proper incentive scheme,” he said.

Ryanair's plans to conquer the Romanian market will, however, not come easy as according to ch-aviation's capacity tool, national carrier Tarom (RO, Bucharest Otopeni) is still the Eastern European state's most dominant carrier cornering 16.9% of the market followed by Hungarian LCC Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) with 14.51% and Romanian LCC Blue Air (Romania) (0B, Bucharest Otopeni) with 8.33%. Ryanair currently sits in fourth place with 7.21%. Domestically, Tarom again controls the lion's share followed by Blue Air.

Ryanair carries more than 100 million passengers in 2015

Ireland-based low-cost carrier (LCC) Ryanair said it transported 101.4 million passengers in 2015, becoming “the first airline to reach this international traffic landmark.”

Ryanair also announced it will open its 77th base at Belfast International Airport in March, with one based aircraft and a 28X-weekly service to London Gatwick. The Irish LCC said the base will grow to three aircraft and five more new routes from October 2016, which will deliver more than one million new passengers per year and support 750 on-site jobs at Belfast International Airport.

According to a carrier statement, the Gatwick slots, which were given up by Aer Lingus as part of the IAG takeover, are being safeguarded and used for the new route to Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Ryanair truly is attacking Wizz Air on this one :o

Ryanair starting 30OCT16 is launching its 83rd base in Sofia, as it plans to base 3 Boeing 737-800 aircraft. This will enable the airline to launch a total of 19 new routes. Planned new routes as follow.

Wow... The capacity they're suddenly adding is unimaginable. I must say I fear for Wizz Air. And truth be told, I'd rather fly with Ryan Air than with Wizz. That mostly is because of the fact that one also has to pay for 'big' carry-on luggage when flying the purple bird... It just takes the 'low' out of low-cost for me...

That being said, I hope Bulgaria Air will stick around for some time as well. I see that Ryanair isn't only attacking Wizz, but also Bulgaria Air on for example the Berlin route. Seems like about 2/3 of the routes they are launching will have other competitors, 1/3 will be completely new for Sofia. Sounds good to me.
